US Resumes Military Support and Intelligence Sharing with Ukraine Amid Peace Talks
Following extensive discussions in Jeddah, military assistance has been reinstated, and Ukraine agrees to a ceasefire proposal with Russia.
Following negotiations between the United States and Ukraine in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, the US has announced the immediate resumption of military aid and intelligence sharing with Ukraine in its ongoing conflict with Russia.
This decision comes after a temporary suspension of such support last week, which was enacted amid tensions between US President Trump and Ukrainian President Zelensky during a meeting in Washington, D.C.
The US has also communicated Ukraine's acceptance of a proposal for a 30-day ceasefire with Russia, which the US plans to present to the Kremlin imminently.
US Secretary of State Rubio stated the importance of Ukraine’s readiness to halt hostilities and engage in dialogue, emphasizing that the next step rests with Russia to respond affirmatively or negatively to the ceasefire offer.
The conflict between Russia and Ukraine has persisted for over three years, igniting on February 24, 2022, when Russian forces launched a significant invasion of Ukrainian territory.
Just a week prior to the resumption of aid, the US had paused all military support to Ukraine, alongside the suspension of intelligence sharing, both of which are considered crucial for Ukraine's defense efforts in the war.
Trump indicated that the resumption of assistance was contingent upon Ukraine demonstrating a sincere commitment to negotiations with Russia.
The suspension of military aid followed a discordant meeting between Trump and Zelensky, which was intended to forge a principle agreement regarding the post-war reconstruction of Ukraine, alongside discussions pertaining to a natural resource deal.
This meeting resulted in Zelensky being escorted from the White House premises amid interpersonal strains.
Today’s gathering in Jeddah marks the first official dialogue between American and Ukrainian delegations since the fallout of the previous month's meeting.
Among the attendees was US National Security Advisor Mike Waltz, while Zelensky was present but did not participate directly in the negotiations.
