Severe Weather Hits Limburg: Hail Storms Cause Damage and Disrupt Daily Life
Strong hailstorms across Limburg result in significant damage to vehicles and properties, prompting emergency responses.
On the evening of Saturday, severe hailstorms swept through the regions of Central and North Limburg, Netherlands.
Reports indicate that hailstones measuring up to two centimeters in diameter were recorded in several areas, including Maasbracht and Beesel.
The storms followed a warm day, with temperatures rising to around 28 degrees Celsius, which led to an intense weather system developing in the late afternoon.
In Maasbracht, hailstones were noted to be so heavy that they caused noticeable dents in parked cars.
Residents in Belfeld reported similar experiences, with damage to vehicles due to the impact from the hail.
Additionally, areas such as Herkenbosch and Melick experienced significant rainfall, resulting in waterlogging and flooding in various basements.
Local emergency services were deployed to assist residents affected by rising water levels.
One local resident from Melick expressed frustration over recurring basement flooding, stating that it has happened approximately 20 to 25 times over the years.
Reports suggest that the continuous rain led to power outages in multiple households, exacerbating the situation.
The Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute (KNMI) issued a yellow weather warning for Limburg and parts of eastern North Brabant, indicating that additional thunderstorms with potential hail and strong wind gusts could occur in the following hours.
The weather alert remains in place until Sunday morning at 09:00 local time.
In addition to the conditions in Holland, severe weather has also been affecting a significant portion of western Germany, where a red alert for thunderstorms, wind gusts, and hail has been issued.
Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely, and residents are advised to stay vigilant and heed safety warnings related to the ongoing weather conditions.
