Rafal Trzaskowski Projected to Lead Poland's Presidential Election in Close Race
Pro-European candidate Rafal Trzaskowski narrowly leads in exit polls against nationalist contender Karol Nawrocki.
In Poland, pro-European candidate Rafal Trzaskowski is projected to become the new head of state according to exit poll results.
The Mayor of Warsaw garnered 50.3% of the votes in the early polls, narrowly ahead of eurosceptic nationalist Karol Nawrocki, who received 49.7%.
Trzaskowski campaigned under the banner of the ruling centrist Civic Coalition, promising to support Prime Minister Donald Tusk's government in achieving its democratic reforms.
A subsequent exit poll indicated a tighter race, with Nawrocki, affiliated with the opposition Law and Justice party (PiS), reportedly generating 50.7% of the votes.
As these are exit polls, the final official results are expected to be announced the following day by the electoral commission.
Following the release of initial exit poll results, Trzaskowski claimed victory, while Nawrocki also expressed confidence in winning, citing the minimal margin between them.
Should Trzaskowski secure victory, it would bolster Prime Minister Tusk's administration.
As a liberal and member of the Civic Platform party, Trzaskowski has aligned himself with Tusk's objectives during his campaign.
Additionally, the Polish president holds veto power, which is vital as it allows the president to block legislation.
Thus, a president favorable to Tusk's government is essential for the successful execution of its policies.
In the previous 2020 presidential election, Trzaskowski narrowly lost to then-incumbent President Andrzej Duda, who is associated with the Law and Justice party.
