European Parliament Leaders Visit Copenhagen to Align on Danish EU Presidency Priorities
Ahead of Denmark's upcoming Presidency of the Council of the EU, key political figures convene to emphasize the importance of a secure and competitive Europe.
The President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, and leaders from various political groups convened in Copenhagen to discuss priorities for Denmark's upcoming Presidency of the Council of the European Union, which commences on July 1, 2025. The meeting took place amidst ongoing geopolitical challenges, including the war in Ukraine, climate change, and global economic pressures.
During the discussions, held in collaboration with representatives from the Danish government, the emphasis was placed on ensuring a safe and competitive Europe.
President Metsola noted Denmark's historical role as a consensus builder within the EU, expressing confidence in the Danish leadership capabilities during this critical period.
In statements made at a joint press conference, both Metsola and Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen underscored the urgency of addressing security concerns, particularly in relation to Ukraine.
Metsola articulated that, "The time for geopolitical outsourcing is over.
We must take responsibility for our own security, and that starts with Ukraine, as Ukraine's security is Europe's security."
Prime Minister Frederiksen echoed this sentiment, discussing the need for cooperation on pressing issues such as migration, energy prices, and military support for Ukraine.
She emphasized that these challenges must be addressed collectively to ensure a robust and secure Europe.
The Conference of Presidents also included an audience with Their Majesties King Frederik X and Queen Mary of Denmark, further highlighting the significance of this preparatory visit.
The rotating Presidency of the EU Council is an important role that allows the holding country to steer discussions and set priorities for the union's agenda.
Following Denmark's term, Cyprus is scheduled to take over the presidency.
The Conference of Presidents serves as a crucial body responsible for coordinating the Parliament's work and is composed of the President of the European Parliament and the leaders of its political groups.
Historically, the conference conducts visits to the incoming presidency country to foster collaboration and understanding ahead of the leadership transition.
