Escalating Conflict: Iran Responds with Missile Attack on Israel
Iran launches less than a hundred missiles in retaliation following significant Israeli airstrikes.
On the evening of October 23, 2023, Iran launched a retaliatory missile attack against Israel shortly after 8:00 PM local time in the Netherlands.
According to the Israeli military, the attack consisted of slightly fewer than one hundred missiles launched in two distinct waves targeting various locations in Israel.
Emergency services in Israel reported that several individuals sustained injuries; however, most of the injuries were deemed non-life-threatening.
By approximately 9:30 PM local time, the Israeli military announced that civilians could exit their shelters as the immediate threat subsided.
Live footage from Tel Aviv showed explosions and plumes of smoke, although it remains unclear whether these were a result of Iranian missiles or retaliatory fire from Israeli air defense systems.
There were also reports of explosions heard above Jerusalem.
Damage reports indicated that a high-rise building in Tel Aviv suffered significant damage, with a fire observed on one of the floors, believed to be part of an apartment complex.
Eyewitness accounts relayed to international media described alarm sirens sounding throughout Jerusalem and Tel Aviv, prompting officials to advise civilians to seek shelter and await further instructions.
Additionally, Iranian state television claimed that its air defense had successfully intercepted at least one Israeli fighter jet, asserting that the pilot was captured.
This assertion has been denied by the Israeli military.
The missile strikes from Iran followed a major Israeli offensive executed the previous night, which allegedly targeted numerous commanders of the Iranian armed forces and prominent scientists associated with Iran's nuclear program.
Israel has stated that these strikes were conducted to thwart Iran's potential development of nuclear weapons.
