Dutch water authorities and the Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute are warning that extreme summer heat is drying vulnerable peat dikes and lowering Rhine water levels, threatening flood defenses and reducing the amount of cargo inland vessels can carry between Rotterdam and Germany.
