Australia Secures Spot in 2026 FIFA World Cup with Victory Over Saudi Arabia
Australia clinches a place in the upcoming World Cup following a 2-1 win against Saudi Arabia in Jeddah.
In a significant achievement for Australian football, the national team has secured its qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup after defeating Saudi Arabia 2-1 in Jeddah.
This victory, accomplished under the guidance of head coach Tony Popovic, marks Australia’s fifth consecutive appearance in the World Cup.
The match saw Australia initially fall behind, but midfielder Connor Metcalfe equalized just before halftime, leveling the score.
The winning goal was scored by Mitchell Duke early in the second half.
The only scenario in which Australia could have lost their qualification at this stage would have been through a major defeat.
The 2026 FIFA World Cup, scheduled to take place from June 11 to July 19, will be jointly hosted by Canada, Mexico, and the United States.
Australia is now the eighth nation to secure a spot in the tournament, joining Argentina, New Zealand, Iran, Uzbekistan, South Korea, Jordan, and Japan, all of which have also confirmed their qualification.
