Amsterdam to Install Tiny Canal Steps to Save Cats
City allocates €100,000 to install animal escape ramps
Amsterdam city council has approved funding of up to €100,000 to install miniature wooden staircases along its canal banks, designed to help cats and other small animals climb out if they fall into the water.
The initiative follows reports of 19 cat drownings in city canals over six months, and officials will work with animal rescue groups to identify high‑risk locations before installation begins.
